My magazine stopped publishing. What happens to my subscription?

When a magazine ceases, merges or goes digital only, the publisher decides what replaces it. What happens to your term, and when a refund applies.

Updated September 19, 2026

When a magazine stops publishing, merges into another title or moves to digital only, the publisher makes that decision. Here is what it means for your subscription and when a refund applies.

What usually happens

Publishers rarely leave subscribers with nothing. In most cases the publisher names a replacement title and moves the remainder of your term to it, and you start receiving the replacement without doing anything. Some titles stop with no replacement at all.

We are an authorized seller, not the publisher. We do not choose the replacement title and we cannot change it. See Who handles my subscription: DiscountMags or the publisher?

When you can get a refund

  • Within 6 months of your order date. Ask us to cancel and we refund every issue not yet sent, pro-rated, to your original payment method. This applies whether the title ceased, changed frequency or converted to digital only.
  • After 6 months. The order is final and is not refunded. If the publisher has assigned a replacement, it continues through the end of your term.
  • A DiscountLock renewal is a new order. It has its own 6 month window, starting from the renewal date rather than your original order.

Full detail is in the Refund & Return Policy and What is a pro-rated refund?

Why your account still shows the subscription as active

Your order page shows the order you placed with us and the term you paid for. It does not track the publisher's day to day decisions, so a title that has ceased can still read as active. That is not a sign the magazine is still coming. If issues have stopped arriving, tell us and we will check with the publisher.

What we cannot do

These are the publisher's decisions, not ours, so we have no way to change them:

  • Choose a different replacement title, or decline the one the publisher assigned.
  • Return a title to print once the publisher has moved it to digital only.
  • Move the value of one order onto another of your orders.

If you are inside the 6 month window, a pro-rated refund is the cleanest option and you are free to order a different title.

Stop a renewal on a title that has ceased

If DiscountLock is on for that subscription, turn it off so it does not renew a title that is no longer publishing. Your current term is unaffected.
